Learn About Eldora by Aaron
What makes Eldora the premier dirt race track for many to go to each year, not once but multiple times? There really is no one reason other than fun for the fans and prestige for the racer. It isn’t the oldest dirt track in America, but it is home to the biggest paying races that are run on dirt. I’ll get to more on that later. But for a driver to strap in and take on the famed half mile and actually take a checkered flag gives that driver a special feeling. For fan to drive up on the facility and see the acres or campers, tents and peoples , there is that, “so this is what I’ve heard so much about” feeling. Yet they have not even seen the track.
The track was built back in 1954 from the ground up by a man whose name is as common to dirt racing as Earnhardt and Petty are to NASCAR racing. Earl Baltes. Earl did not really have much of a vision of this sort of a race track but the story goes that he was easily influenced. Earl came away from a race that he attended impressed with the amount of people who would attend such an event as well as the cars that paraded the track and raced each other. Earl came away thinking that if it worked there, maybe he could build something bigger and better. He’d already bought a nearby ballroom for his band to play at on weekends. It had acres to go with it. He began constructing the race track and it came to fruition as ¼ mile track. 4 years later in 1958, it became the high banked ½ mile that it is today.
The track began hosting races as the original ¼ mile but at that time, there were no big time races being held. However in 1962, Earl invited the United States Auto Club (USAC) sprint series into the facility to host a show. USAC at that time featured such drivers as AJ Foyt and Johnny Rutherford. USAC drivers took a liking to the track because the speed and width of the track. It soon became a regular race for the series at Eldora and still holds races at the track today for open wheeled cars. 3 year later though, Earl decided to host the first Eldora 500 in which 33 sprint cars would take to the track and race 500 laps on the famed ½ mile. It certainly was something that would be done only a few times as driver attrition and open wheeled race cars could not sustain the wear for 500 laps. It was won when it was run, but Earl began promoting other tracks and the event was not held again after the 1960’s. 500 laps on that track with today’s equipment would likely see no one finish.
