Baseball Cap Trivia by Mark Fulham
I bet you haven’t heard about these interesting tidbits about the ubiquitous baseball cap. There was a time in our history when they were worn only by players for their functionality.
Say for example, because all baseball games were played in the afternoons, the visors grew steadily longer in the early decades of the 20th century.
But today, the baseball cap has evolved to the point that they are no longer worn only by ball players. Today they’re worn by celebrities, presidents, teens and truckers alike.
Brooklyn Excelsiors – They wore the first rounded baseballcap design in 1860. By the 1900’s this design was eventually known as the “Brooklyn Design”.
Steven Spielberg and Spike Lee – These famous directors popularized wearing baseball caps amongst peers instead of wearing the traditional beret.
Wool – Before the use of polyester, baseballcaps were sewn in six sections using this material.
They have now gone a long way from their humble beginnings. Nowadays, fans show their allegiance to their favorite baseball teams by wearing caps with the team’s logo and color on it.
Previously, baseball caps started in standard hat sizes. Since 1980, they usually come in a one-size-fit all type, with a strap that can be adjusted in the back. This makes marketing simple, but it decreases sun protection for hairless people. Lately, because of advance textile have develop a “stretch-fit” hat, that uses Lycra or rubber to have the hat a fitted style while it is “adjustable” within sizes.
UV Protection
However, baseball caps don’t provide enough protection from the sun’s UV radiation. Excessive UV exposure is a leading cause of skin cancers among human beings. A normal baseball cap leaves the face sides, neck and ears all uncovered to the sun rays.
Design
Baseball caps are manufactured using different materials and they are sewn in various styles for many different purposes. Baseball players from major and minor leagues wear classic-style hats made from wool (or, lately, polyester) and with their team’s simple colors and logo; usually the logo is embroidered into the fabric.
